Moving forward collaboratively…

This week, BARTA brought together a variety of agencies and experts who deal with incidents involving animals, whether single animal focussed or wide scale community events affecting multiple people and animals. Jim Green, BARTA Director of Operations said, “This is the first time we have had such a diverse range of agencies discussing their organisational response to animal incidents. Understanding their priorities and exploring how we can support each other collaboratively will directly benefit people and animals. There are clear concerns that the animal component of human emergencies and animal specific issues will develop in response to emerging climate driven emergencies and we are right to be having conversations now about preparedness and resilience. BARTA are committed to encouraging and facilitating debate and seeking practical, evidence based solutions for our responders. I’d like to thank all the agencies who attended … Continue reading

Collaboration in developing resources

Members of seven Fire and Rescue Services, representing the National Fire Chiefs Council Animal Rescue Practitioners Forum, came together to help film the linchpin techniques utilised by UK large animal rescue teams. It has been nine years since we last compiled a comprehensive suite of resources and BARTA are updating materials in line with what we have learned through experience and stakeholder consensus. The films demonstrate a methodical, role based approach to basic techniques which, once learnt, can be adapted to suit the circumstances encountered. Whilst the films don’t have their audio as yet, you can get a good idea of the format and style we are looking to deliver. Resource packs for Team Leaders and Instructors provide essential information in line with National Operational Guidance and support learning gained through BARTA’s Large Animal Rescue Team Leader courses, which (all … Continue reading

Oxygen therapy training for emergency responders

BARTA have launched new guidance for emergency service responders who regularly support pets caught up in fires and other traumas. Whilst the intention is always for animals to see a veterinarian as soon as possible, immediate lifesaving actions are often delivered by first responders. In recognition of this, BARTA are developing protocols to support national operational guidance through collaboration with veterinary critical care experts and animal behaviourists, plus end users such as the National Fire Chiefs Council technical group for animal rescue. To view the training go to: www.bartacic.org/smokey-paws Oxygen therapy is the first package to be released and coincides with the charitable activities of Smokey Paws, a Community Interest Company dedicated to enabling first responders to give the best care possible to the nation’s pets. This is the beginning of a suite of training offerings from BARTA who are developing the trauma care aspect of Incidents Involving Animals in line with National Operational Guidance for the fire and rescue service. BARTA Director Jim Green said, “Provision of oxygen therapy masks for pets through charitable donations is a really worthy cause and allows emergency services to give greater support to families in trouble by helping their pets too. With 50% of households owning animals and many regarded as family members, there is a societal expectation, legal and moral duty for responders to … Continue reading
