Team Leaders Learning About Equine Transport

Another week of Large Animal Rescue Team Leader training at our Horse Trust training facility in Buckinghamshire. Thanks to all the team for making it a huge success. Dealing with horses in distress and in danger can be extremely challenging for emergency responders. Knowing what to do and who to call is critical to a successful and safe resolution for human and horse. BARTA training for fire and rescue service team leaders explores strategies employed when horses are loose or trapped. When problems occur on the road network, establishing who can provide transport and in a timely fashion is crucial to the plan. BARTA Director, Jim Green, in his operational role as an animal rescue specialist with the fire and rescue service, has first hand experience of the effectiveness of PRP Rescue. “I recently attended an incident where a pony … Continue reading

New MOU between BARTA and NFCC

British Animal Rescue and Trauma Care Association (BARTA) and National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) Memorandum of Understanding BARTA are delighted to announce a new MOU with the National Fire Chiefs Council, building on the success of the NFCC Animal Rescue Practitioners Forum, which was established in 2008 to develop national standards for fire and rescue service response to animal incidents.  The NFCC brings together operational leadership of the UK’s fire and rescue services to provide coordinated professional, operational and technical leadership of the sector, advising and supporting central and local government, and other stakeholders.  Following publication of national operational guidance for the fire and rescue service in 2017, the scope for planning and responding to incidents involving animals has widened, in recognition that emergency responders may encounter animals within most operational contexts.  Interaction with animals creates challenges for any response … Continue reading

Collaboration in developing resources

Members of seven Fire and Rescue Services, representing the National Fire Chiefs Council Animal Rescue Practitioners Forum, came together to help film the linchpin techniques utilised by UK large animal rescue teams. It has been nine years since we last compiled a comprehensive suite of resources and BARTA are updating materials in line with what we have learned through experience and stakeholder consensus. The films demonstrate a methodical, role based approach to basic techniques which, once learnt, can be adapted to suit the circumstances encountered. Whilst the films don’t have their audio as yet, you can get a good idea of the format and style we are looking to deliver. Resource packs for Team Leaders and Instructors provide essential information in line with National Operational Guidance and support learning gained through BARTA’s Large Animal Rescue Team Leader courses, which (all … Continue reading

Training for Surrey Veterinary Students

BARTA teamed up with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service to help prepare over 100 Surrey University final year veterinary students for the challenges they will face when dealing with animals at emergency incidents. Veterinarians are often called to help emergency services deal with the animal component of many situations they face, which could be fire, flood or other type of rescue. Awareness training like this gives vet students an appreciation of the way emergency responders operate and how the vet fits in to the team. They also learn how the approach to a trapped animal is very different from everyday clinical work. BARTA veterinarians provide guidance on how to adapt veterinary skills to tackle the challenges within an evolving aspect of veterinary medicine. Despite very wet conditions students had the chance to practice internationally recognised techniques used to move large … Continue reading

Oxygen therapy training for emergency responders

BARTA have launched new guidance for emergency service responders who regularly support pets caught up in fires and other traumas. Whilst the intention is always for animals to see a veterinarian as soon as possible, immediate lifesaving actions are often delivered by first responders. In recognition of this, BARTA are developing protocols to support national operational guidance through collaboration with veterinary critical care experts and animal behaviourists, plus end users such as the National Fire Chiefs Council technical group for animal rescue. To view the training go to: www.bartacic.org/smokey-paws Oxygen therapy is the first package to be released and coincides with the charitable activities of Smokey Paws, a Community Interest Company dedicated to enabling first responders to give the best care possible to the nation’s pets. Smokey Paws have provided fire appliances across the country with oxygen therapy masks for … Continue reading

BARTA featured in Emergency Services Times

Recent fire and rescue service National Operational Guidance (NOG) has allowed emergency managers and responders to reflect on a change of language from purely ‘animal rescue’ to ‘Incidents Involving Animals’. The principle behind this is to demonstrate how emergency responders may be exposed to animals, with associated risks and challenges, at almost any foreseeable incident type. BARTA (British Animal Rescue and Trauma Care Association) is developing situational awareness training for first responders, firstly to recognise and plan for potential animal encounters and then understand how animals might impact operational decision-making and tactical planning. The new awareness package will be launched formally in the early part of 2020 and features contributions from many of BARTA’s stakeholders, making this an interactive session based on recognisable scenarios within the emergency service sector. 10 step process Core to understanding how animals will impact operational … Continue reading

Connecting with the Experts

BARTA would like to say a huge thank you to Ray Girotti and the team at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists, Alton, for hosting a meeting this week to establish a standards committee for pre-veterinary Immediate Emergency Care. At the meeting were critical care specialists Adam Mugford and Dominic Barfield, critical care nursing specialist Belinda Andrews-Jones, Barta’s Jim Green and Neil Rae and Dr Nicola Housby-Skeggs veterinary director at the Horse Trust and BARTA advisor (pictured above). As national operational guidance requires emergency responders to support pets before they reach veterinary care, BARTA are creating role specific training for the emergency services with assistance from UK specialists and collaboration with worldwide critical care experts. Pets will be in safer hands as a result of this level of expertise!

Smokey Paws Multi Agency Training Day
