Team Leaders Learning About Equine Transport
Another week of Large Animal Rescue Team Leader training at our Horse Trust training facility in Buckinghamshire. Thanks to all the team for making it a huge success. Dealing with horses in distress and in danger can be extremely challenging for emergency responders. Knowing what to do and who to call is critical to a successful and safe resolution for human and horse. BARTA training for fire and rescue service team leaders explores strategies employed when horses are loose or trapped. When problems occur on the road network, establishing who can provide transport and in a timely fashion is crucial to the plan. BARTA Director, Jim Green, in his operational role as an animal rescue specialist with the fire and rescue service, has first hand experience of the effectiveness of PRP Rescue. “I recently attended an incident where a pony … Continue reading

The NFCC brings together operational leadership of the UK’s fire and rescue services to provide coordinated professional, operational and technical leadership of the sector, advising and supporting central and local government, and other stakeholders. Oxygen therapy training for emergency responders
BARTA have launched new guidance for emergency service responders who regularly support pets caught up in fires and other traumas. In recognition of this, BARTA are developing protocols to support national operational guidance through collaboration with veterinary critical care experts and animal behaviourists, plus end users such as the National Fire Chiefs Council technical group for animal rescue. To view the training go to: www.bartacic.org/smokey-paws Oxygen therapy is the first package to be released and coincides with the charitable activities of Smokey Paws, a Community Interest Company dedicated to enabling first responders to give the best care possible to the nation’s pets. Smokey Paws have provided fire appliances across the country with oxygen therapy masks for … Continue reading
BARTA featured in Emergency Services Times
Recent fire and rescue service National Operational Guidance (NOG) has allowed emergency managers and responders to reflect on a change of language from purely ‘animal rescue’ to ‘Incidents Involving Animals’. The principle behind this is to demonstrate how emergency responders may be exposed to animals, with associated risks and challenges, at almost any foreseeable incident type. BARTA (British Animal Rescue and Trauma Care Association) is developing situational awareness training for first responders, firstly to recognise and plan for potential animal encounters and then understand how animals might impact operational decision-making and tactical planning. The new awareness package will be launched formally in the early part of 2020 and features contributions from many of BARTA’s stakeholders, making this an interactive session based on recognisable scenarios within the emergency service sector. 10 step process Core to understanding how animals will impact operational … Continue reading
