BARTA Community – Spotlight on our People
The BARTA community wouldn’t exist without the many dedicated people who contribute their time, skills and expertise across all species groups to help us fulfil our vision, inspiring excellence in animal response. With that in mind we want to shine a light on those individuals who have helped BARTA on their journey. Dr Chris Tufnell BSc(Hons) BVMS FRCVS What inspired you to get involved with BARTA? In my first few years in equine practice I was unlucky enough to be involved with several emergencies involving horses on the M3 and M4 motorways. It was clear to me then that coordination between vets and rescuers, particularly the Fire Service, was crucial to maximise the chances of successful and safe outcomes for all involved. I was lucky enough when based in the New Forest to attend the first ever course for vets run … Continue reading →

Collaboration in developing resources
Members of seven Fire and Rescue Services, representing the National Fire Chiefs Council Animal Rescue Practitioners Forum, came together to help film the linchpin techniques utilised by UK large animal rescue teams. It has been nine years since we last compiled a comprehensive suite of resources and BARTA are updating materials in line with what we have learned through experience and stakeholder consensus. The films demonstrate a methodical, role based approach to basic techniques which, once learnt, can be adapted to suit the circumstances encountered. Whilst the films don’t have their audio as yet, you can get a good idea of the format and style we are looking to deliver. Resource packs for Team Leaders and Instructors provide essential information in line with National Operational Guidance and support learning gained through BARTA’s Large Animal Rescue Team Leader courses, which (all … Continue reading →

Training for Surrey Veterinary Students
BARTA teamed up with Surrey Fire and Rescue Service to help prepare over 100 Surrey University final year veterinary students for the challenges they will face when dealing with animals at emergency incidents. Veterinarians are often called to help emergency services deal with the animal component of many situations they face, which could be fire, flood or other type of rescue. Awareness training like this gives vet students an appreciation of the way emergency responders operate and how the vet fits in to the team. They also learn how the approach to a trapped animal is very different from everyday clinical work. BARTA veterinarians provide guidance on how to adapt veterinary skills to tackle the challenges within an evolving aspect of veterinary medicine. Despite very wet conditions students had the chance to practice internationally recognised techniques used to move large … Continue reading →

Connecting with the Experts
BARTA would like to say a huge thank you to Ray Girotti and the team at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists, Alton, for hosting a meeting this week to establish a standards committee for pre-veterinary Immediate Emergency Care. At the meeting were critical care specialists Adam Mugford and Dominic Barfield, critical care nursing specialist Belinda Andrews-Jones, Barta’s Jim Green and Neil Rae and Dr Nicola Housby-Skeggs veterinary director at the Horse Trust and BARTA advisor (pictured above). As national operational guidance requires emergency responders to support pets before they reach veterinary care, BARTA are creating role specific training for the emergency services with assistance from UK specialists and collaboration with worldwide critical care experts. Pets will be in safer hands as a result of this level of expertise!

Smokey Paws Multi Agency Training Day
At a recent weekend multi agency training day BARTA teamed up with the wonderful team at Smokey Paws, a non-profit organisation, to create a new training resource for first responders who use Smokey Paws oxygen therapy masks when pets are involved in emergencies and disasters. This is the beginning of a suite of training offerings from BARTA who are developing the trauma care aspect of Incidents Involving Animals in line with National Operational Guidance for the fire and rescue service. BARTA Director Jim Green said, “Provision of oxygen therapy masks for pets through charitable donations is a really worthy cause and allows emergency services to give greater support to families in trouble by helping their pets too. With 50% of households owning animals and many regarded as family members, there is a societal expectation, legal and moral duty for responders to … Continue reading →

Fire and Vet Liaison Evening
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) hosted a veterinary liaison evening in conjunction with BARTA this month. Hosted at Winchester Fire Station and sponsored by Vestaplas, Farm and Stable, the evening attracted 18 members of 8 large animal veterinary practices that support the Hampshire Animal Rescue Team at large animal rescues. The purpose of the meeting was to build relationships, understand each other’s capabilities and discuss ways to support each other in dealing with animal rescues as efficiently and safely as possible. During a panel discussion, useful topics such as escorting vets to reach the scene of a road incident, creating a patient handover record for the owners regular vet and how to manage people at the scene of an incident were discussed, along with other questions that arose from past experiences. Hampshire’s experienced animal rescue team demonstrated some of … Continue reading →

Promoting Safe and Legal Towing
Jim Green Director of BARTA met with Sarah Smithurst and Julie Pywell of the National Trailer and Towing Association (NTTA) at the Horse Trust site in Buckinghamshire recently to look at opportunities to work together. Both BARTA and the NTTA are members of the National Towing Working Group (NTWG), who in April officially launched their Safety Framework at the newly formed All-Party Parliamentary Group on Trailer and Towing Safety at the House of Commons. Jim said; ” Many unwanted situations occur on UK roads with equine or livestock trailers. Incidents like these affect both lives and livelihoods and work is underway to discover the causes. Naturally, BARTA and the NTTA have come together in collaboration to promote education and research for this particular sector of the towing community. I am convinced that our common passion and desire to make the towing of animals safer will lead to new … Continue reading →

Wildfires – a personal story
This time last year Jim Green our Director of Operations and his family were in California whilst Jim was working for the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Doctor’s John Madigan and Claudia Sonder invited me to support them in further integrating animal issues during emergencies and disasters within the veterinary and first responder communities. The year was deemed to be exceptional in regard to disaster in northern California with extreme incidences of both fire and flood. During the 2017 wildfires in Sonoma County, myself and the Student Veterinary Emergency Team led by Dr John Madigan supported Animal Control at shelters and behind evacuation lines. They provided welfare and evacuation for animals left behind as the fires overran communities with speed and unpredictability. In 2018 those extreme fires have returned and as I write this families are without homes, emergency … Continue reading →

Wearing PPE… a culture change for vets
The culture is changing in the veterinary industry as a whole and wearing helmets is now common and becoming normal. This is mainly because of mandatory policies in relation to competitions and local policies set at many yards. BEVA is raising awareness of the importance of equine behaviour modification, equine behaviour assessment, risk assessment and risk reduction (including PPE and helmets). Professor Josh Slater says, “The time is right for the equine vet profession to fully engage with helmet use. Our vet schools all have helmet policies, some mandatory (i.e. wear helmets at all times when working around animals) and others are risk based, but each year of new graduates from 2018 onward will be “used to wearing helmets.” “The really pleasing thing is that students seem to be embracing helmets and we certainly don’t see any signs of reluctance … Continue reading →
