New BARTA Handbook Collaboration with the RCVS Fellows
BARTA is delighted to present the latest edition of our Animal Responder Handbook. A comprehensive, waterproof glove box resource that serves as an aide-mémoire for emergency service team leaders and veterinary professionals deciding on techniques and tactics for large animal interventions.
This version provides protocols for mechanical lifting and trailer righting. It also recognises that ambulatory large animal vets may encounter companion animals during an emergency.
Fellows of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons have contributed their expertise to provide sedation and anaesthesia protocols for small animals, complementing existing protocols for cattle and horses. We are grateful for continuing collaboration across sectors to improve outcomes for people and animals in crisis.

We are extremely proud to release the latest version of our BARTA responder handbook.
The aim of the handbook has always been to reduce stress at an incident by providing a simple guide to prompt and support communication between responders coming together in a complex incident. The new handbook contains all the previous information regarding techniques and doses for large animals, combining responder and veterinary information to further enable fluent conversation between professionals.
The new handbook includes a guide for large animal vets encountering small animals at incidents essential for ensuring the emergency and critical care can be provided for our patients in challenging and resource limited environments

RCVS Chair of the Fellowship Board, Dr Niall Connell BVMS CertSAO Hon.DVM&S FRCVS said:

BARTAs Small Animal Advisor Adam Mugford BVetMed, MVetMed, DACVECC, FRCVS, said:
“The updated BARTA Small Animal guidance in the Responder Guide represents an important step forward in supporting emergency responders when incidents involve animals. Developed with RCVS Fellows with further specialist input from the BARTA Small Animal Advisory Group, it provides practical, evidence-informed guidance for real-world situations.
We hope it will improve confidence, decision-making, and ultimately the care and welfare of animals affected by emergencies.”
