The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) recognised BARTA Director Jim Green during this year’s annual congress awards ceremony. The award for significant contribution to equine welfare was presented by HRH The Princess Royal and sponsored by the Blue Cross.

BEVA and The Princess Royal have a long standing interest in the animal rescue initiative, having hosted a launch for the Emergency Services Protocol at Buckingham Palace in 2007.

Following the launch, recognising the need for veterinarians to effectively support emergency service responders at incidents, BEVA president Professor Josh Slater established BEVA’s Safer Horse Rescue initiative and introduced training for veterinary professionals. Josh, himself a recipient of the BEVA Welfare Award in 2009 for his commitment to the animal rescue initiative went on to co-found BARTA with Jim in 2012 and remains on the Board of Directors.

Through his time developing animal rescue procedures within the fire and rescue service and now full time with BARTA, Jim has been commended by a variety of organisations for advancement of animal welfare during civil emergencies. He was awarded British Horse Society Welfare awards in 2007 and 2010, the RSPCA Richard Martin Gold Award for Animal Welfare in 2016 and the National Equine Forum, Sir Colin Spedding Award, in 2017.
